  2. body to the speed of sound in the undisturbed 
  3. medium through which the body travels. Mach 1 
  4. is reached when a body (such as an aircraft) 
  5. has a velocity greater than that of sound 
  6. (`passes the sound barrier'), namely 331m 
  7. (1,087) ft per second at sea level.
